Abstract
Type of the study: Cross-section study Problem to be studied: Malnutrition refers to deficiencies, excesses or imbalances in a person’s intake of energy or nutrients. It is in two groups of conditions. First one is ‘under nutrition’ which includes stunting (low height for age), wasting (low weight for height), wasting (low weight for age) and micronutrient deficiency or insufficiencies (lack of important vitamins and minerals). The other one is overweight, obesity and diet related non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, stroke and cancers. But in this study will look much on malnutrition among adult people living with HIV/AIDS and who are on ante retro viral treatment as one of opportunistic diseases among the mentioned group of people. Broad objective - To assess the predictors of malnutrition among adult people living with HIV and on antiretroviral therapy at Karonga District Hospital Specific objectives: i. To determine the number of adult PLWHA who are on ART and malnourished at Karonga District Hospital. ii. To determine factors associated with malnutrition among adult PLWHA and receiving ART at Karonga district hospital. Methodology: This is a cross sectional study. The study population are adults over 18years old who are HIV positive and are on ART. These people will be identified at ART clinic at Karonga District Hospital. Data will be obtained from client’s files and an interview using a questionnaire. will also go for routine laboratory investigations of HB and CD4 count check, then results will be analyzed by investigator. Test will be used to detect if there is low hemoglobin level and CD4 counts as are some of indicators of malnutrition. Expected findings and dissemination: We will describe the number of people with Malnutrition among adult’s people living with HIV/AIDS and its risk factors in this population. We will therefore share our findings with Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, COMREC, Karonga District Health Office, District Health Management Team and the District Commissioner. We will also present findings at local and international conferences and in peer reviewed publications.
