    The prevalence and risk factors of post-partum depression in Malawi

    Type of study: A descriptive cross –sectional qualitative and quantitative study involving 185 participants, post-partum mothers, will be conducted to assess the prevalence and risk factors of Post-partum depression. Broad objective: The main objective of the study is to determine the magnitude of post-partum depression in health centers in Malawi. Specific objectives: the specific objectives of the study are: 1. To estimate the prevalence of postpartum depression in health centers in Blantyre 2. To determine the risk factors of postpartum depression in Blantyre. Methodology: The study will be conducted in four health centers, two in rural and two in urban Blantyre, Malawi. It will involve postpartum mothers visiting postnatal clinics two to four weeks after delivery. Chi square analysis will be used to determine associations between various factors and the presence of PPD. Expected findings: Postpartum depression is a psychiatric condition with depressive symptoms meeting the criteria for a major depressive episode with symptoms starting during pregnancy or within four weeks of delivery. Prevalence of PPD is three times higher in developing countries compared to developed countries with various risk factors accounting for the high burden of illness. In Malawi data on prevalence and risk factors has not been well established. This is what our research will be centered around. Dissemination: The research findings will be presented in a research dissemination conference and a copy of the final report of results will be submitted to College of Medicine Research and Ethics Committee.
