    An Evaluation Study: Understanding perspectives about research participation and documenting good community dissemination practices in a community Randomised trial: The case of Kasungu, Malawi

    Type of Study This is a cross sectional study that will use qualitative methods in order to understand perspectives about research participation and document community dissemination practices in a community randomised trial in Kasungu, Malawi. The Problem to be studied There have been notable investments in large multi-partner research programmes across the agriculturenutrition-health (ANH) nexus. These studies often involve human participants and commonly require research ethics review. These ANH studies are complex and can raise ethical issues that need pre-field work, ethical oversight and empirical research to identify ethical issues. In 2019, the Addressing Hidden Hunger with Agronomy (AHHA) trial was conducted in Kasungu district in the central region of Malawi to test the efficacy of improving selenium status through the consumption of agro-fortified maize flour. As the trial team plans to disseminate study findings, the Bioethics team would like to understand the perspectives about trial participation and document community dissemination practices in a community randomised trial in Malawi. Objective and Specific Objectives This evaluation study aims to explore the perspectives of trial participants about trial participation and describe and document perseptives of research participants in Kasungu after dissemination of study findings, document community dissemination practices in a community randomised trial in Kasungu. Methodology This study will be conducted by the Bioethics team as an evaluation of a trial that was conducted in Kasungu. The overall trial was conducted in Kasungu District under Wimbe Traditional Authority in the Central Region. The trial was titled Alleviating Hidden Hunger with Agronomy (AHHA) study. The AHHA trial team has planned trial results dissemination activities in July 2022 therefore this evaluation project would like to observe and document dissemination practices and explore perspectives about trial participation. We have planned data collection for a period of 2 months. Observations will be done concurrently with the dissemination activities by AHHA trial members. The study will employ a qualitative approach where Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with previous interviewed Trial Participants (TPs) and their partners will be conducted to gain numerous perspectives. To increase the data validity, in-depth interviews will also be conducted with village head men, Agriculture Extension workers at all levels and Health Surveillance Assistants to obtain more information on their experiences after the trial. An Observation of the dissemination activities will be conducted to document dissemination practices. All interviews will be conducted conducted in convenient places for example the village clinics on days that they are no clinics, some outside churches grounds. These places are central within the villages. Expected findings and dissemination of study findings It is expected that this study will provide useful insights and uncover perspectives of TPs and key stakeholders in Malawi about research participation and document dissemination practices. The study will help in gaining an in-depth understanding of TPs perceptions about trial participation from a community setting in a developing country. The documentation of dissemination practices will help in coming up with recommendations for ethically dissemination practices. The finding of this study will be disseminated through publication in peer reviewed journals. A report of findings will also be submitted to COMREC.
