- ItemRestrictedPrevalence of Bacterial Vaginosis Among Pregnant Women at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital(Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, 2022-03-10) Chiwoko, SamuelBacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common vaginal disorder in women of reproductive age. BV is the leading cause of abnormal vaginal discharge, and it is quickly becoming a major health problem among women. However, there is limited data in Malawi about its prevalence and the risk factors that are associated with it. This study will provide an important opportunity to advance the understanding of what BV is, its prevalence, and the risk factors associated with it among pregnant women in Blantyre, Malawi. The study will be a descriptive cross-sectional study. The study population is pregnant women of the age of 18 and above attending the obstetrics and gynecology department at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) Blantyre. A simple random sampling technique will be used. High vaginal swabs will be collected by the clinician providing care to the patients, and these will be analyzed at the College of Medicine Microbiology laboratory. A self-administered questionnaire in either Chichewa or English, according to the participant’s preference, will be administered to the participants. Data will be entered into Microsoft Excel and analyzed using SSPS IBM version 20. It is expected that a relative proportion of the pregnant women will be found with BV. Results will be presented at the College of Medicine MLS research seminar and a copy will be sent to COMREC and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
